According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the West doesn’t want the war between Russia and Ukraine to end.
He issued this remark in an address delivered to members of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian Federal Assembly, as part of the process of his reappointment after a government reshuffle. Russia Today (RT) pointed out that Lavrov’s assessment implies that Western nations do not truly want a negotiated end to the hostilities, instead preferring matters to be decided on the battlefield.
“That’s their right. If they want it to be on the battlefield, they will have it on the battlefield,” said the senior diplomat. He stressed that Moscow was prepared to secure its objectives in the conflict through diplomatic means, but it would not hesitate to do so through military action if needed.
Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested Lavrov’s candidacy for foreign minister after the president’s inauguration resulted in a mandatory resignation of the current cabinet. Under the Russian Constitution, the head of state – in this case Putin – chooses the prime minister for the parliament’s consideration, and after his approval names ministers responsible for security and policy. In turn, the recently-appointed prime minister appoints the rest of the cabinet.
“The biggest change was Putin’s decision to name acting Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu as secretary of the [National] Security Council,” RT wrote. “Acting First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov, a civilian official with a record of supervising economic reforms, is slated to take the defense ministry portfolio in the new government.”
In his speech before the Federal Council, Lavrov told lawmakers that Moscow was ready to show goodwill “despite multiple previous deceptions by the West” and to sign a peace agreement that would benefit Kyiv. However, the Ukrainian government canceled the pre-approved document.
According to Lavrov, Russia was “cheated” and “forced” to keep fighting in the conflict that has dragged on for more than two years. (Related: U.S. military official ADMITS British commandos are operating covertly in Ukraine.)
Western nations insist that Kyiv is a victim of “unprovoked” aggression by Russia and have promised to arm it, as many of its leaders have claimed, “for as long as it takes” to defeat its neighbor. In contrast, Moscow believes that the conflict is a U.S.-initiated proxy war on Russia – with Ukrainian soldiers being used as “cannon fodder.”
Russian officials have also insisted that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO’s) growing presence in Ukraine and Kyiv’s discriminatory policies against ethnic Russians “forced Moscow’s hand.” Moreover, Moscow has also claimed that the U.S. is covering up Ukrainian terrorism.
Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., warned that children, women and the elderly are being killed with Western weapons. “Some promises by Kyiv not to use weapons it received from America on targets in our country are not worth a penny,” he said. Antonov also criticized the “ostrich” policy adopted by the West and the reluctance to keep Ukraine in check.
For the past few months, the Russian city of Belgorod has become the main target of Kyiv’s attacks. Ukraine has continued shelling and attempts to get past Russian territory.
